Background
Born in Nebraska in 1954 and raised in Arizona. Resident of Japan since 1978. Has worked mainly in investor relations, at own firm since 1988. Handled interpreting and media relations for former Olympus CEO Michael Woodford after latter was terminated for revealing massive financial fraud at company. Later engaged in support activities for Yokoo Nobumasa, wrongly convicted as mastermind of Olympus fraud after being held in detention for 966 days before receiving verdict. Took Buddhist vows in 2009.
Has published several English translations of Japanese nonfiction, including Matsutani Akihiko’s demographic wake-up call, Shrinking-Population Economics (Tokyo: iHouse Press, 2006); Ishikawa Kyuyoh’s iconoclastic history and theory of East Asian calligraphy, Taction (Tokyo: iHouse Press, 2011); and Fujiwara Akiko’s book-length poem Pho to n (Aberdeen: Gean Tree Press, 2012). In 2015, published Japanese-language collection of 13 interviews with leading authorities on socioeconomic issues in contemporary Japan in (Tokyo: Kodansha).
